I have the honour to request your authority, in

accordance with Colonial Regulation No.345, to write off

the sum of $58.20, which is the stock book value of three

tons of coal which was found to be missing from the Harbour

Department Steam Launch No.H.D.3 on 6th January, 1940.

It was discovered that this steam launch had left

a pier after rewatering on the evening of 5th January and

on the way to her usual buoy had made a short unauthorised

voyage for which the crew offered no satisfactory

explanation.

Subsequent investigations disclosed that

three tons of coal of the launch's bunkers could not be

accounted for and it is inferred that they were illicitly disposed of by the crew during this unauthorised voyage to

another waiting craft. An enquiry was held by the Harbour

Master on 11th January, 1940, as a result of which I have

approved the summary dismissal of the entire crew, with

forfeiture of salary in respect of the previous ten days.
